SUBJECT : File Rights Under NetWare 386
DATE : 6/6/90
FYI # : 060690km2
OS VERSION : 386 v3.0
REVISION :
SHELL VERSION :
GENERAL INFORMATION : Many service people have called insisting that their is
a bug in how the rights work for files under NetWare 386. The typical scenario
goes like this:
I have a user that only has read and file scan rights in a directory but
has all rights to a given file in that directory. When attempting to make
changes to that file, he gets errors indicating that he does not have
enough rights. Whats wrong?
Everytime this has been reported to me, the user is attempting to modify
the file with an editor. I have never seen an editor that does not create a
temporary work file. The failure coming back is an attempt to create the
temporary file. As the user lacks that rights to create in the directory,
this is why it fails.
If you wish to prove to yourself that it works, try appending to the file.
This can be done doing a "dir >> <filename>. After completing this
operation, you will see that the size and date have been changed meaning
that a modification has occured.
